The city of Abbeville is located in the south central region of Louisiana. It serves as the county seat for the Parish of Vermilion. With a population of approximately 12,000 Abbeville is proud of its small town charm.
Abbeville was founded in 1850 by a French Priest who, in his design of the town, gave it two beautiful town squares, and a unique French flair.
Abbeville offers a variety of cuisine, including Mexican, Chinese and Cajun Seafood and Steak restaurants serving up some of the tastiest dishes in the south. Visit the first seafood patio in Louisiana to serve boiled crawfish, or the oldest stock yard/auction barn in the parish. VERMILION PARISH
Louisiana was officially Roman Catholic under both France and Spain's rule. The territories generally coincided with church parishes. In 1807, the ecclesiastical term was officially adopted. Through each change in her history, Louisiana never deviated and the primary civil divisions have been officially known as parishes ever since.
Vermilion is one of the state's largest and most diverse parishes. With gulf waters to open prairies and hardwood bottom swamps dotted with small towns in between. The Parish encompasses 1,174 square miles.
The Jean Lafitte Scenic Byway crisscrosses Vermilion Parish, routing you on Hwy 82 also known as the Hug- the- Coast- Highway. This segment will provide you with a look at some of the most extensive marshlands in North America.
Loop Four of the America's Wetland Great Gulf Coast Birding Trail also passes through Vermilion Parish. This loop offers opportunities for seeing an assortment of birdlife, from Mississippi kites and borad-winged hawks during the summer nesting season, to a variety of Neotropical songirds during the spring and fall migration. During spring, fall and especially winter months bring ducks, geese and sandpipers on some of the loop areas south of Abbeville.
